0:3 against Manchester City: Bayern Munich needs a miracle in the second leg

In the Champions League, Bayern Munich had a very bad evening: after the 0:3 against Manchester City, the team is facing quarterfinal elimination. MCIFCBIn the second match of the evening, Inter Milan defeated Benfica Lisbon 2:0.

Kicker writes: “A heavy burden for the second leg: Haaland und Co. kanzeln Bayern ab”, the FAZ speaks of an “evening to forget for FC Bayern”, the SZ headlines “Upamecano loses balls without need”. And on Twitter, many are making fun of coach Tuchel after Nagelsmann’s sacking, as Bayern suffered their worst Champions League defeat since 2017.

Manchester City took a big step toward a third straight Champions League semifinal with a 3-0 win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Bayern was already behind after less than half an hour of play: Spaniard Rodri scored for Manchester, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland added after halftime.

Bayern had gone into the game with an impressive CL record, with eight straight wins, including against Inter Milan, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

But under new coach Thomas Tuchel, FC Bayern Munich had no answer to Manchester’s offensive power.

City took the lead in the 27th minute with a goal from Rodri.

Shortly after Ruben Dias had blocked a shot from Jamal Musiala, the Spanish international took off with his left foot and fired into the top corner from around 20 yards.

Shortly after, the home team could have extended the lead, but Ilkay Gundogan failed to beat Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer from close range.

In the second half, Bayern appeared more offensive, but they did not score.

And they made fatal mistakes in defense: after a blunder by Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano, who lost the ball deep in his own half, Manchester City scored the second goal.

Jack Grealish passed to Haaland, whose cross was headed in by Bernardo in the 70th.

Haaland then scored his 45th goal of the season himself when he latched onto a header from John Stones.

Bayern’s new coach Thomas Tuchel found no means against the English team coached by Pep Guardiola to move FCB towards the final round.

The English champions were defeated by Real Madrid in the semifinals last season, but will be looking to reach the final four again.

Inter defeats Benfica Lisbon

Inter Milan ended their losing streak with a 2-0 win at Benfica Lisbon in the other Champions League quarterfinal first leg on Tuesday.

Nicolo Barella and Romelu Lukaku’s second-half goals at the Stadium of Light gave Inter their first win in more than a month and put the Italian side in a good position to reach the semifinals of European competition for the first time in more than a decade.

The second leg will be played next week in Milan. For Benfica, managed by German coach Roger Schmitt, it was the first Champions League defeat in 13 games this season. Benfica had entered the competition in the third qualifying round and was one of the surprises of the competition after going unbeaten in a difficult group that also included Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus Turin.

Benfica suffered a defeat to rivals Porto in the Portuguese league, but had since won 13 of their last 15 games in all competitions.

Inter is winless in six games in all competitions, with its last win in the Italian league coming against Lecce in March. Inter is trying to reach the last four for the first time since winning the title in 2010. It is in the last eight for the first time in twelve years.
