0:4 defeat! RWE suffers another setback in basement battle

After losing 1:3 at home to Verl, Rot-Weiss Essen suffered another bitter defeat in the crisis summit at Hansa Rostock. Essen went down 0:4.

It was a very bitter afternoon for Rot-Weiss Essen: The basement battle between Hansa Rostock and RWE at the Ostseestadion on the 12th matchday of the third division ended 4-0 (1-0).

Rostock took control of the game from the start in their first match at home since the dismissal of coach Bernd Hollerbach. In the fourth minute, Nils Fröling won a footrace with Eric Voufack, who had come into the Essen starting line-up for the suspended Julian Eitschberger, and forced RWE keeper Jakob Golz into a save.

RWE did not get into the game at all. First, Sigurd Haugen shot wide with the outside of his foot (10th minute), then Golz had to make a second save early on when he parried a shot from Adrien Lebeau from a tight angle (12th minute). Only a few minutes later, he had to save against Haugen (15th minute) – the early stages clearly belonged to the home side.

Christoph Dabrowski’s team made their first serious mark in the 25th minute when Torben Müsel narrowly missed the goal from distance. FC Hansa then put the pressure on: Golz first saved against Jonas Dirkner after a corner kick variation (33th minute), then seconds later Haugen headed over from three meters out with no one around him (35th minute). Rostock then took a deserved lead in the 37th minute through Kevin Schumacher. Golz made a superb save from Fröling, but was powerless to prevent Schumacher from tapping in the rebound.

But Essen also had their chances before the break. Ramien Safi shot wide from a tight angle (39′), and Joseph Boyamba forced Hansa goalkeeper Benjamin Uphoff into a strong reflex save (43′). Nevertheless, Rot-Weiss went into halftime trailing 0-1.

Things then turned bitter for RWE in the second half. Essen came out of the break with momentum and had their best chance through Manuel Wintzheimer, but the striker narrowly missed the Rostock goal (53′).

However, Essen’s offense remained toothless, and at the other end, keeper Golz was called into action time and again, such as in the 69th minute against Ryan Naderi. Hansa celebrated their second goal after a corner: Dario Gebuhr rose highest and headed home to make it 2-0 (77′).

The game was decided just moments later when substitute Tim Krohn took advantage of a terrible mistake by Jose-Enrique Rios Alonso to make it 3-0 (81′). After Robbie D’Haese was unable to continue due to a hard tackle by Krohn, which was only punished with a yellow card, and Essen had to finish the game with one man down, Ryan Naderi scored the final goal of the game in stoppage time (90+5) to make it 4-0.
