1. FC Köln signs Selke from Berlin

Fußball-Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln have signed former European U21 champion Davie Selke from league rivals Hertha BSC.

The 27-year-old attacker will receive a contract until the summer of 2024, the Cologne club confirmed on Monday. Selke’s contract in Berlin would have expired at the end of the season, and under coach Sandro Schwarz he has only featured three times in the starting eleven this season.

“Davie fits very well with our idea of the game and the striker profile we are looking for,” said Cologne’s managing director Christian Keller: “As a classic nine, he has his qualities in the box and yet also works immensely hard against the ball.” Selke should also “give the team important impulses on and off the pitch with his mature personality”.

Coach Steffen Baumgart’s team has lacked a top scorer since Anthony Modeste left for Borussia Dortmund last August. Selke made his professional debut for Werder Bremen in the 2013/14 season and established himself as a regular player. Selke subsequently moved to RB Leipzig and then to Hertha in Berlin.
