1. FC Saarbrücken brings in this full-back – Ziehl’s role remains open

First last weekend, 1. FC Saarbrücken won 2:1 against SC Freiburg II. One day later, FCS presented a player from Breisgau.

Third division club 1. FC Saarbrücken are continuing to put together their squad for the upcoming 2024/2025 season and have announced another new signing.

Defensive player Philip Fahrner is moving to the Saar from SC Freiburg II on a free transfer and will strengthen the wing, preferably the right side of the defense.

Born in the Black Forest, the 21-year-old came through SC Freiburg’s renowned youth academy and went on to make 27 appearances in the 3rd division. “We are consistently continuing our rejuvenation program and have signed a very well-trained player with prospects in Philip Fahrner. He is technically and tactically very adept, can be deployed variably on the wing and in midfield and, above all, has a great mentality on the pitch. We are looking forward to working with him and are convinced that he will take the next step in the professional game with us,” said sporting director Jürgen Luginger.

“I was in the stadium for FCS’s last home game against my training club and was impressed by the outstanding atmosphere in Ludwigspark. Saarbrücken is simply a mega traditional club with a lot of development and great potential! I’m absolutely delighted to be able to play here in front of these fans and with this team,” said Fahrner, looking forward to his new employer.

1. FC Saarbrücken: Ziehl continues with dual function?

Meanwhile, the personnel issue of Rüdiger Ziehl remains unresolved. At least as far as the duties of the current head coach and manager are concerned. It is still uncertain whether Ziehl will continue to perform this dual function.

Head of sport Luginger told “MagentaSport”: “There will be talks in the executive committee over the next two or three weeks. Then we’ll see whether he continues in this dual role. But what’s more important now is that we bring in good players. Whether it’s a dual role or not is of secondary importance.” Luginger added: “It will be his decision whether he prefers to work in the office or on the pitch. “
