More and more German professional footballers are seeking their fortune beyond Germany’s borders. So is this Bundesliga-experienced player, who has now signed in Poland.
This summer transfer window has already seen Sonny Kittel move from Hamburger SV to Raków Czestochowa and Lawrence Ennali, who was on loan to Rot-Weiss Essen last season, move from Hannover 96 to Górnik Zabrze. Here he plays together with world champion Lukas Podolski.
Sebastian Kerk will also play against Podolski and Co. with immediate effect. The 29-year-old 152-time German second division player and 50-time Bundesliga professional was introduced to Widzew Lódz on Wednesday (23 August). The club won the Polish championship four times (1981, 1982, 1996, 1997). German international Uli Borowka (61) also once played for Widzew – in the 2007/2008 season.
“I played my whole career in Germany. It will be a big change for me as well as for my family. But I’m really looking forward to it. Why?”, Kerk is quoted as saying on the Widzew homepage.
Kerk continues: “Look at the stadium. I saw the last home game and was simply thrilled by the crowd, by the atmosphere that prevailed here. I can’t wait now when I’ll be performing in front of these fans.”
Kerk also revealed what was going through his head when the request came from Lódz. He says: “The first thing that came to my mind was: ‘I will represent these fans’. In the last weeks, even months, I received many messages that included that I should move to Lódz. And now I’m here (laughs).”
Left-footed Kerk spent the last two seasons with Hannover 96, while he also signed for VfL Osnabrück, SC Freiburg, 1. FC Nürnberg and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Kerk played the most games for Nürnberg (81 matches, seven goals, 18 assists) and Hannover (51 matches, twelve goals, five assists). Now the first matches for him in Poland’s Ekstraklasa will follow. On Friday (25 August, 20.30) Widzew will then host Slask Wroclaw.
