1860 München and Waldhof Mannheim fly out of the State Cup

The favourite in the Bavarian State Cup is out of the competition. Third division runners-up 1860 München disgraced themselves at a regional league team.

This is an embarrassment! Third division runner-up TSV 1860 München has been knocked out of the Landespokal – the same competition as the Niederrhein or Westfalenpokal – in Bavaria.

In Illertissen, 17th in the Bavarian Regionalliga, the Löwen lost 0:1 in front of 1623 spectators. Maurice Strobel scored the winning goal for Illertissen’s amateurs after just 15 minutes and sealed the exit for 1860 coach Michael Köllner’s team.

“0:1! Regionalligist Illertissen kicks arrogant and haphazard Lions out of the Toto Cup” was the title of the portal “dieblaue24.de” for the 1860 exit.

It was the quarter-final in the Bavarian state cup. FC Ingolstadt did things differently to TSV 1860 München. The league rivals of the “Sechziger” avoided embarrassment and won their semi-final ticket against VfB Eichstätt with 6:5 after a penalty shoot-out. But in the cup, as we all know, the only thing that counts is getting through.

This weekend, 1860 München will travel to the Signal Iduna Park to face the U23 team of Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 2 p.m., RevierSport live ticker).
