2 of 3 Essen clubs through, Oberliga team out – floodlight failure in Düsseldorf

Ten Lower Rhine Cup duels were on the agenda on Tuesday evening (29 August). There were a few surprises.

Last year’s finalist Rot-Weiß Oberhausen mastered the first round of the 2023/2024 Lower Rhine Cup competition with ease. In the city derby at Landesliga side Arminia Klosterhardt, the regional league team won 4:0.

Meanwhile, a district league team, VfR Krefeld-Fischeln, pulled off a surprise. The VfR eliminated Oberliga side TSV Meerbusch with a 2-1 win.

ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen, also an upper league team, had a hard time at Düsseldorf district league team Sparta Bilk, but in the end turned a 0:1 deficit into a 3:1 victory. While ETB progressed, SV Burgaltendorf, a club from Essen, was knocked out early. The district league team was defeated by SC St. Tönis 0:3.

The third Essen club in action that evening was FC Kray. In the duel at the district league team SV Genc Osman Duisburg, the Kray team won 5:2 after extra time. In extra time, Oberligist Ratingen 04/19 also prevailed at Landesligist MSV Düsseldorf. Ali Hassan Hammoud (118th) scored the goal of the evening. Curious: The floodlights in Düsseldorf-Eller had failed just in time for extra time. But after a few minutes, the game could be resumed.
