Fortuna Düsseldorf’s second team has signed a player from the third division who was promoted with MSV Duisburg last season.
Forecasting had already announced it on Wednesday (January 7): Fortuna Düsseldorf’s reserve team will sign Moritz Montag, who terminated his contract with MSV Duisburg, which was valid until summer 2026.
Confirmation followed on Thursday: the second division club’s U23 team has signed Montag. The 27-year-old defender, who played for Fortuna’s youth team from 2013 to 2021, most recently played no role at third division club MSV Duisburg. After 208 regional league games, he waited in vain for his third division debut. “We are very pleased to have signed Moritz for our U23 team. He has a wealth of experience in this league and will immediately take on an important role in the team. He has also played for Fortuna for many years and therefore has a close connection to the club. In addition to his sporting qualities, Moritz brings a good mix of experience, identification and leadership skills, which will greatly benefit our young team.”
“It was immediately clear to me that I wanted to make this move to Fortuna, because the club means a lot to me and is very close to my heart. The return is something very special for me, not least because I have been living in Flingern for a long time. I want to fulfill the role I have been given from day one and do my part to help us achieve our sporting goals,” adds Montag. Montag joined Fortuna’s youth team in 2013 from TSV Bayer Dormagen. The 27-year-old moved up to the Red and Whites’ U23 team for the 2017/18 season, making over 100 appearances for them until the summer of 2021. After further spells at Wuppertaler SV and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, Montag has been playing for MSV Duisburg since the 2024/25 season. The defensive player brings with him a total of 208 appearances in the Regionalliga West (15 goals, 24 assists).
