Wuppertaler SV has scored 48 goals this season. One player has been involved in the majority of these goals.
The signing of Charlison Benschop should prove to be a direct hit for Wuppertaler SV. Even at 34, the former Bundesliga striker from Hannover 96 is far from quenching his thirst for goals.
The striker was involved in 19 of Wuppertaler SV’s 48 goals this season. He scored eleven goals in 22 appearances and set up a further eight WSV goals. Benschop had his best phase of the season in the first six matchdays, when the Red & Blue got off to a great start with five wins and a draw. Benschop scored four goals during this period and set up three others.
No wonder WSV are keen to see him in the Bergisch jersey again next season. And that will be the case.
Benschop revealed at the press conference ahead of the game on Sunday (March 3, 2 p.m., live ticker) against SC Paderborn’s U21 team: “My contract has been extended by a year. I’m delighted, I feel really comfortable here. I came to Wuppertal with the idea of achieving something here and that still applies. “
Of course, there is still hope. We can’t just let it go now. We want to achieve the highest possible placing this season. That’s how we’ll approach the rest of the season

And even with the current ten-point deficit to Alemannia Aachen, the experienced attacker has not yet put the chase for first place behind him. But, of course: Benschop also knows that WSV will need a completely different form in the next few matches than in the embarrassing 3-1 defeat at FC Wegberg-Beeck.
“We’ve already had a loss like that several times this season, against teams that are supposedly weaker. We definitely need to work on that. There’s nothing you can do about the fact that the pitch is getting worse by the minute. We have enough quality to hold our own on a pitch like this. That is not and must not be an excuse,” he emphasized.
Now it’s time to face Paderborn II. WSV suffered their first defeat of the season at SCP on September 9, 2023. Benschop: “I remember the Paderborn game. That was the first game we lost that season. It was a chaotic game, even with a red card for Kevin Pytlik. But that was then. Now we’re already one step further. The coach is preparing us very well for Sunday.”
And what else is possible this season? Benschop’s answer: “Of course there’s still hope. We can’t just let it run its course now. We want to achieve the highest possible position this season. That’s how we’ll approach the rest of the season. “
