281 Oberliga games – District league club presents Büderich captain

Lower Rhine Oberliga club FC Büderich and its captain Kevin Weggen are going their separate ways in the winter. He is transferring to the district league.

Forecasting had already reported on Monday morning (December 15, 2025): Kevin Weggen is transferring from FC Büderich in the Oberliga to 1. FC Viersen in the Bezirksliga. The current captain of Büderich, who is currently in London, did not want to confirm this transfer to RS. A few hours later, an official announcement followed from Viersen, which is threatened with relegation. “With Kevin Weggen, we welcome another top-class player to Hohen Busch. The 32-year-old midfielder is transferring from FC Büderich in the Oberliga Niederrhein to 1. FC Viersen and brings enormous footballing experience as well as a strong presence and stability to the center of our team,” according to the press release from 1. FC Viersen.

His soccer career has taken him to numerous clubs in German soccer, including SV Straelen, FC Wegberg-Beeck, KFC Uerdingen 05, and VfB Lübeck, before moving to FC Büderich and now Viersen. His résumé includes 281 appearances in the Oberliga Niederrhein.

1. FC coach Stephan Houben, who knows Weggen from their time together at FC Wegberg-Beeck, says: “Kevin was one of my absolute dream players. In addition to his numerous footballing qualities, we also have a family connection – he is my second cousin. He is also following in the footsteps of his father, Harald Weggen, who was goalkeeper for 1. FC Viersen in the 1980s. I am very pleased that Kevin is helping us to approach the mission of staying in the league with optimism and conviction.“

”I am very much looking forward to the new challenge. I have played for many traditional clubs and it is always something very special. In addition, my father played for 1.FC Viersen many years ago, so for me it’s like coming full circle. Another important point is my family connection to Stephan Houben. We worked very well together at SV Straelen and we will try to do the same again in Viersen!” said the current FC Büderich captain in the 1. FC Viersen press release.
