After two years of being forced to play Corona, 28,500 visitors took part in the traditional Christmas caroling of Bundesliga football club 1. FC Union Berlin.
Although the event in the sold-out stadium An der Alten Försterei suffered from heavier rain in the second part on Friday evening, which particularly affected the visitors inside the stadium.
However, this did little to dampen the fans’ spirits. Classics such as “Guten Abend schön’ Abend”, “Ihr Kinderlein kommet” and “Oh Tannenbaum” could be heard by candlelight. Union songs were also sung. Among the visitors to the 20th edition were Union defender Paul Jaeckel and ex-Union players Jan Glinker, Ronny Nikol, Björn Brunnemann and Björn Kopplin.
The tradition has existed at Union since 2003. 89 supporters gathered for the premiere 19 years ago without permission. In the original of all Christmas carols in football stadiums, the fans still sing themselves with the support of the Emmy-Noehter-Gymnasium in Köpenick. The Grünau pastor Ulrich Kastner once again recited the Christmas story. A fan in Father Christmas costume looked back with irony and pride on the most successful year in the club’s history.
