Rot-Weiss Essen got back on track at home. In the third division derby against BVB II, they recorded a deserved 4:0 victory. RWE jumps to fifth place for the time being.
In the third division match between Rot-Weiss Essen and Borussia Dortmund’s U23s, both teams were looking to escape from their short negative run.
RWE have not won any of their last four games, while BVB have lost their last two encounters. BVB lost their third game in a row on Sunday, while RWE won brilliantly 4:0 (1:0) and climbed to fifth place for the time being.
Before the game, RWE sporting director Christian Flüthman emphasized on Magenta Sport: “We’ve lost a bit of our ease in attack, especially on the offensive.”
Against BVB, for whom striker Paris Brunner played his first third division match, Essen had the first big chance after six minutes in front of 17,137 spectators. But BVB goalkeeper Silas Ostrzinski saved from Moussa Doumbouya’s shot.
It seemed that RWE had heard Flüthmann’s words, as they looked much better in attack than they had recently. The final punch was missing, but only until the 44th minute. Obuz crossed into the middle. And just like in Verl, Doumbouya scored – this time with his head. The interval lead for RWE. Doumbouya’s fourth goal of the season.
And BVB? They had the opportunity to take the lead themselves in the 30th minute. But Brunner was denied by RWE keeper Jakob Golz
After the changeover, RWE kept at it and took every opportunity to switch quickly. That was rewarded. After 58 minutes, it was Obuz again who broke through and was fouled by Franz Pfanne in the penalty area. Doumbouya converted the resulting penalty – his first brace for RWE.
BVB did not recover from this 0:2. Borussia did try to become dangerous. But you never got the feeling that RWE would be in danger that day. On the contrary, RWE had numerous counter-attacking opportunities, none of which were played out properly.
Until the 84th minute, when it was Obuz who laid the ball off perfectly to Isaiah Young. Young converted to make it 3:0 – Obuz’s 20th goal of the season – but that was still not enough for the hosts.
In stoppage time, it was substitute Sascha Voelcke who made it 4-0 after a pass from Björn Rother. Shortly afterwards, Essen’s tenth home win was perfect.
RWE continue their campaign after the international break on Saturday (March 30, 4:30 p.m.) at 1. FC Saarbrücken. BVB play at home against Waldhof Mannheim on the same day (2 p.m.)
