5:5 after leading 5:1 – “It’s a mystery to me”

Danny Konietzko, coach of SC Werden-Heidhausen, was frustrated with the depth of his squad after the 5:5 draw, following a 5:1 lead against Hamborn 07.

There was a real spectacle in the Lower Rhine 2 regional league on Sunday (September 14). SC Werden-Heidhausen drew 5-5 with Hamborn 07.

What made this spectacular final score so special was that Werden was leading 5-1 until the 78th minute, before Hamborn staged an incredible comeback. Werden head coach Danny Konietzko, who has been with the SC since 2012, spoke of an extraordinary event: “I’ve been a coach for a few days now, and I think I’ve seen every game situation there is. I would have thought that something like this would never happen to me.” Konietzko found it difficult to process the match: “I drove home very quickly after the game and watched the entire match again. That was very important to me before I formed an opinion. Even after seeing these images, it remains a mystery to me how this could have happened.”

The 50-year-old saw the substitutions in the second half as the key moments in the unfortunate draw: “We have to put our finger on the problem. After we made the substitutions, there was a big break in the game. I’m not just blaming the players who came on, but also the players who had performed very well up to that point and then also became weaker. That simply cannot happen.”

The long-time coach was frustrated with the depth of his squad: “Two fullbacks had to leave the field injured in the 80th minute. I had to make substitutions out of position. We don’t have good depth on the bench at the moment.”

However, Konietzko was also able to draw positive conclusions from the goal fest: “We did really well for 70 minutes. I would like to mention that, of course. I can’t see everything as negative in a game like this. Nevertheless, I have to say that no other game has ever preoccupied me as much as this one, and that’s saying something.”

The SC Werden-Heidhausen coach is looking ahead to the upcoming games: “We have to look ahead again. The next league and cup games are just around the corner. There’s not much time to dwell on this.”

The coach summed up: “One thing is clear after the first few games. There’s a world of difference between the Landesliga and the Bezirksliga.”
