8 stages, almost 1000 km: Dutchwoman Vollering wins women’s tour

At the Tour de France Femmes, cyclist Demi Vollering has taken the overall victory.

Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering has won the second edition of the Tour de France Femmes. The 26-year-old did not let herself be deprived of the overall victory in the final time trial in Pau on Sunday. Vollering held a 3:03-minute lead over second-place Belgian Lotte Kopecky in the overall standings after eight stages and 959.9 kilometers.

Vollering’s compatriot and defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten had to settle for fourth overall. The final time trial was won by Swiss European champion Marlen Reusser, who finished ten seconds ahead of Vollering in 29:15 over 22.6 kilometers.

Vollering had laid the foundation for victory on Saturday at the mountain finish on the Tourmalet, when she won by nearly two minutes. The overall win capped her outstanding year, having already won the difficult one-day races Strade Bianche, Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in the spring.

At the next Tour de France, Vollering will have a home game at the start. In 2024, the Tour will start in Rotterdam, and the second and third stages will also be held in the Netherlands.
