A legend’s match in Qatar did not end well for former Schalke professional Kevin Kuranyi. The ex-national player suffered a serious injury.

Former German international Kevin Kuranyi injured his knee in a legends match during the World Cup in Qatar. “I somehow twisted my knee and immediately felt that probably some things are broken. The first suspicion is unfortunately that a lot of things are torn,” the former VfB Stuttgart and FC Schalke 04 striker told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur on Thursday. Earlier, the newspaper “Bild” had reported on the incident. Kuranyi was taken to a hospital in Doha by ambulance after the accident.

The world governing body FIFA is hosting the so-called Legends Cup at the Doha Tennis Stadium on Thursday and Friday, where almost 100 former male and female footballers have been divided into different teams and will compete against each other. Among them are former world champions Lothar Matthäus, Jürgen Klinsmann (both Germany), Cafu, Roberto Carlos (both Brazil), Youri Djorkaeff (France) and Francesco Totti (Italy). Kuranyi was in the Northern Bears team, alongside former Mexican goalkeeper Jorge Campos, among others.

The former German international striker (52 caps) is now a player consultant and businessman. Among other things, he deals with real estate and cryptocurrencies, as he recently reported in an interview with WAZ.

Fourth place in the eternal Schalke goalscoring statistics

For five years Kuranyi played for FC Schalke 04 in the Ruhr area. From 2005 to 2010 the attacker scored 71 Bundesliga goals and thus ranks fourth in the eternal Schalke Bundesliga statistics. Only Klaus Fischer (182 goals), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (84) and Ebbe Sand (73) scored more goals than Kuranyi.
