Ex-VfL keeper extends contract with second-division club

Former Bochum goalkeeper Patrick Drewes has extended his contract at Sandhausen. In return, he has apparently even turned down Liverpool FC.

Well, if that isn’t a token of love for his current club: former VfL keeper Patrick Drewes has extended his contract at SV Sandhausen ahead of schedule. Long-term, as the second-division club emphasises. The club did not give any details about the exact length.

“It is far from self-evident that Patrick is clearly committed to SV Sandhausen in our current situation,” said sporting director Mikayil Kabaca. “Patrick is a leading player and top performer in our team and contributed with strong performances last season to the fact that we still managed to stay in the relegation zone. I am sure that he will also be a guarantor for our goal of playing in the 2nd division for the 12th year in a row next season.”

Coach Alois Schwartz spoke of an “important sign within the team”.

With his contract extension at Sandhausen, he may have turned down an offer from top English club Liverpool FC. Drewes is said to have been contacted by the team around former BVB coach Jürgen Klopp, as Sport Bild recently reported. The Reds are currently on the lookout for a replacement goalkeeper.

The native of Delmenhorst had been under contract with VfL Bochum from 2019 to 2021 and had then moved from Castroper Straße to Sandhausen. During his time at VfL, however, Drewes was only the number two behind Manuel Riemann for most of the time. In the two years he played nine games in the VfL jersey.

Because he desperately wanted to be the number one, he joined SV Sandhausen after they were promoted to the Bundesliga. There he is the undisputed number one and has been in goal 49 times so far. During this time, the 29-year-old has kept ten nil and thus advanced to become one of the strongest goalkeepers in the 2nd Bundesliga.
