Niklas Süle has disturbed the discussions about the “one-love” tie at the World Cup in Qatar. The Borussia Dortmund defender still wants to attack Bayern in the Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund international footballer Niklas Süle has said he felt negatively affected by the constant discussions surrounding the “One Love” armband at the World Cup in Qatar.

“Yes, it has bothered me personally. I think it is right and important to draw attention to grievances. But when it comes to a football tournament, it should – at some point – also come to football,” the defender told the newspaper Welt am Sonntag. He added that as a player you also have to face an expectation. “That’s when it would have been necessary to also get intensively involved with football,” the 27-year-old said.

He was aware of the personal criticism of his performance at the World Cup, especially from TV pundits. “I know myself after ten years of professional football whether I did a good or a bad game. The experts get money for expressing their opinion. That’s their right and it’s part of my job to deal with it. I think I’m doing that quite well,” Süle said.

He has taken the criticism about his fitness to heart. “It’s true that I perhaps have to pay a little more attention than others to what I do on holiday. But in the meantime I have a certain amount of experience in that and I think I’m doing better and better.”

With BVB, Süle wants to attack once more despite the nine-point gap to FC Bayern Munich. “If we were to win the two remaining first-round games, we would be back among the frontrunners. I can still remember that BVB were once nine points ahead of Bayern and in the end Bayern became champions,” said Süle, who was part of the German record champions’ team at the time.
