Ex Schalke coach Markus Weinzierl must go at Nuremberg

Coach release in the 2nd Bundesliga: Markus Weinzierl has to go at 1. FC Nürnberg. His team had lost 0:5 at Heidenheim at the weekend.

Markus Weinzierl is no longer coach of 1. FC Nürnberg. As the second-division club announced on Monday morning, the 48-year-old former Schalke coach was relieved of his duties – the day after the bitter 0:5 defeat at 1. FC Heidenheim.

A successor has not yet been announced. At 1 p.m., the club will hold a press conference to discuss the future of the coaching position. Co-coach Frank Steinmetz will take over the players’ substitute training on Monday.

The Nuremberg club did not give any further reasons for the decision. What is clear, however, is that the club is running behind in its demands. FCN, who were in the promotion race in the pre-season, are in 13th place in the table after 21 match days and are only two points above the relegation zone. With 17 goals, Nuremberg has the weakest offence in the league.

Weinzierl only took over from Robert Klauß in October. Of eleven second division games under his leadership, the Franconians could only win three (three draws, five defeats). Despite a major transfer offensive in the winter, the start to the new year went wrong with three defeats from four games.

This means Weinzierl is out of a job again less than five months after being hired. In the 2016/17 season, the Straubing native was under contract with FC Schalke 04. He also worked as head coach at Jahn Regensburg, twice at FC Augsburg and at VfB Stuttgart.
