Robin Himmelmann wants to make the most of his opportunity at second-division football club Holstein Kiel. “Of course, this is also about my future,” the goalkeeper told the “Kieler Nachrichten” (Wednesday). The 34-year-old Himmelmann had been substituted for regular goalkeeper Tim Schreiber, who had injured his knee, in the 1-1 draw at SV Sandhausen on Saturday and is now expected to be between the posts for the games on Sunday (1.30pm/Sky) against Jahn Regensburg and on 18 March in the North derby at Hamburger SV.

“I’ve had a strange six and a half months, then sat on the bench, and now I probably have the chance to play. That’s what I’ve been working towards all this time,” Himmelmann continued. The former St. Pauli goalkeeper, who most recently played for KAS Eupen in the Belgian league and previously also for Rot-Weiss Essen and Schalke II, was signed by Kiel during the winter break and given a contract until the end of the season.

Himmelmann is not nervous ahead of his probable starting debut for the “Störchen”: “Now in the training week, it doesn’t feel special yet. I’m not very excited right now,” said the goalkeeper, but added: “Usually it’s only on match day that the tension rises. Our goal against Jahn Regensburg is of course to be successful and I want to do my part from the first minute.”

The 34-year-old is not making any claims about the time after Schreiber’s recovery: “I have said from day one that I will not throw slogans around. No matter who is on the pitch, it’s always about putting in the best possible performance. Everything else is not my decision. “
