Although the regional capital had already taken an early lead in the duel between the promoted teams, Mohamed El Mimouni’s team had to go home empty-handed. “The team with more luck won. In the table, the Düsseldorfers are still above the line after the defeat thanks to a better goal difference. But Union Nettetal, a rival with the same number of points, is lurking right behind them.

El Mimouni, however, can also take something positive from this situation: “This is the most important phase for the young players. Even if we don’t manage to stay in the league until the last match day, a league like this is brutally important for their development, and it’s very different from winning everything, like last year. The young players were just swimming along. Now they have to take up the fight.”

Still, the 39-year-old doesn’t sugarcoat anything: “We know what it means when a total of six teams are relegated. It’s not a funfair league. We also lack experience. Unfortunately, that is the problem. The boys are all talented and all give their all, but the performance is always like a pendulum. It can sometimes swing the other way. “

Despite this, El Mimouni is convinced of his team: “Sporting-wise, we can keep up. It’s not like we get a trip every week.” And his contract extension, announced at the beginning of March, should also be a motivating factor in the relegation battle. “Since the first matchday I have shown the signal that I want to extend. Also for the young players,” El Mimouni stressed.
