The U23 of SC Freiburg secured a point late in the home match against 1. FC Saarbrücken. The goal to equalise was controversial.

SC Freiburg’s U23s had remained without defeat since last November. But on Monday evening, it looked as if this streak would snap. The Breisgau team was trailing at home against 1. FC Saarbrücken until the final minute of the 29th matchday of the 3rd division.

But then SCF striker Vincent Vermeij came on and scored the late equaliser. The score remained 1-1 – and Freiburg remained unbeaten for the twelfth match in a row.

The second team, which is second in the table and, as is well known, is not allowed to be promoted, will take this remarkable series into the away game at Rot-Weiss Essen next Saturday (2 p.m., RS-Liveticker).

Meanwhile, Saarbrücken missed the coup in the Black Forest by a hair’s breadth. With their fourth win in a row, the FCS could have drawn level with VfL Osnabrück in the relegation places. Now the Saarlanders remain two points behind in sixth place.

The late equaliser on Monday evening was a controversial one, however. Goal scorer Vermeij had tipped the ball into the net after FCS goalkeeper Daniel Batz had probably already had both hands on the ball. While the Freiburgers cheered euphorically, the scene caused fierce protests from the visitors – in vain. Marvin Cuni had given Saarbrücken the lead in the 14th minute.
