The Bavarians meet a lot of resistance against SC Freiburg in the DFB Cup. The lead doesn’t last long, the final phase turns into a thriller – and the visitors manage the sensation.

Lucas Höler shocked FC Bayern and Thomas Tuchel with a painful exit in the DFB Cup. In a dramatic final phase, the SC Freiburg striker scored the late winner (90.+5) on a handball penalty in a 2-1 (1-1) win for the euphoric visitors, who won in Munich for the first time ever.

After a second half with great superiority of Bayern, the Breisgauers turned the cup quarter-final on its head on Tuesday. Tuchel was dealt a severe mood-altering blow in his second game with the new club – the treble is gone.

In front of 75,000 spectators, Freiburg had countered Dayot Upamecano’s opening goal with a header and vehement physical play (19th) with a dream goal by Nicolas Höfler (27th) – and they struck again in the final phase.

Three days after the demonstration of power in the Bundesliga with the 4:2 against Borussia Dortmund, Tuchel has a lot of work ahead of him after the first title knockout. The next tough test comes next week with the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City.

Musiala with the handball, Höler converts ice-coldly

In the final phase, the game was played almost exclusively in Freiburg’s half, even superstar Sadio Mané was substituted by Tuchel (79th). However, the Bavarians hardly had any chances to score. Jamal Musiala was responsible for the hand penalty, which was heavily contested by the Bayern pros.
