The England women’s football team celebrated their historic triumph in Trafalgar Square in London together with thousands of fans. The 2-1 win over Germany in front of around 87,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium was the first major success for an England football team since 1966.

“We’ve done more celebrating in the last 24 hours than playing football. It’s been incredible (of course) to share that with everyone who watched our game and everyone in the country. We are so grateful for your support,” Leah Williamson, captain of the England team, shouted to the celebrants.

It was only a year ago that the men’s team lost to Italy on penalties in the European Championship final and missed out on the long-awaited trophy.

For the English women’s team, it was already the third participation in a European Championship final and the first since the 2:6 defeat against Germany at the European Championship 2009 in Finland.

According to the BBC, 17.4 million people in the UK watched the final on television, plus around 6 million who watched the match via live stream.
