SV Meppen’s 2-1 away win at SV Wehen Wiesbaden was interrupted for half an hour. Thanks to a spectator, however, it could continue.

That doesn’t happen every day. During the match between second-placed SV Wehen Wiesbaden and bottom-placed SV Meppen on Saturday, a spectator stepped in as a linesman. In the end, the underdog surprisingly won 2-1 (1-1) and celebrated its second victory in a row.

But what happened? In the 21st minute, one of the referee’s assistants accidentally twisted his ankle while trying to avoid the ball. After a break for treatment, he had to be taken off the field on a stretcher.

As there was no fourth official in the stadium who could have stood in for the injured referee, both teams were initially sent to the dressing room with the score at 1-0 to Hesse. After a brief consultation, an inquiry was made over the stadium loudspeakers as to whether there was a referee with the necessary license among the spectators.

The referee was indeed found and the game was resumed after more than 30 minutes of interruption. The guests coped better with the adverse conditions and turned the game in their favor.

The goal by Ivan Prtajin (14.) was equalized by Marvin Pourié (26.). Shortly before the end, Willi Evseev got Meppen the important three-pointer (84.). In the standings, the red lantern was thus at least temporarily handed over to FSV Zwickau. For Wiesbaden, it’s a bitter blow in the fight for promotion.
