SC Freiburg are threatened with sporting consequences by the DFB after the spectator riots during the DFB Cup semi-final against RB Leipzig (1:5).

Although a abandonment of the match was never an issue for referee Sven Jablonski (Bremen), he will record the incidents around the 70th minute in his report.

“We will write down what we perceived,” Jablonski said on Sky after the rematch of last year’s final: “The safety of the players always comes first. But a match abandonment is the last resort. We were able to continue because the players were ultimately safe.”

After just under 70 minutes, some SC supporters had blown their fuses. A handful of fans attempted to storm out of the corner towards the pitch, with projectiles flying at the warming-up RB substitutes. Striker Andre Silva was apparently hit by a coin. It took a few minutes for the scene to calm down.

“We spontaneously decided that the substitutes should change sides. In addition, the Freiburg players had a calming effect,” explained Jablonski: “If the players had signalled that they needed a break, we would have reacted.”

Professionals and officials alike condemned the incidents. “This is shitty and has no place in the stadium. We can only apologise for that,” commented Freiburg’s sports director Jochen Saier. “This is an incident that should not happen,” said RB coach Marco Rose: “But you often have two or three idiots in the stadium.
