SG Essen-Schönebeck celebrated a clear 6:0 victory over TuS Essen-West on the 29th matchday in Bezirksliga 7 Niederrhein and thus took a big step towards promotion to the Landesliga.

SGS go into the final matchday with a two-point lead over Blau-Gelb Überruhr. A draw would be enough to secure promotion, as the clearly better goal difference would tip the scales in Schönebeck’s favour in an even direct comparison.

A decision in the promotion race could already have been made after the 29th matchday: Until shortly before the end of the match between their rivals Überruhr and Vogelheim, Schönebeck could hope for a draw by the Blue-Yellows, which would have meant an early passage to the higher division. However, Überruhr scored the winning goal in injury time to win 2-1 and thus postponed the decision on promotion to the last matchday.

Olaf Rehmann, coach of SGS, was not surprised by the last-minute victory of the opponents: “Some of our players were there, but I didn’t have very high hopes for a slip-up by Überruhr even before the game.” The Schönebeck coach now expects his team to perform at their best in the last game: “We have everything in our own hands. “

The Esseners’ last opponent is Rhenania Bottrop, who are ninth in the table, while runners-up Überruhr face the second team of SSVg Velbert, who are in a relegation battle. “We played well against Essen-West. All the men are fit again now, the team is desperate for promotion and knows its strengths. We are hard to beat,” Rehmann affirms.

The teams have a longer break until the last matchday, as there are no matches on the coming Whitsun weekend. “We’re winding down the workload a bit next week so that everyone can regain their strength,” explains the SGS coach. There is no sign of nervousness or pressure in the squad, Rehmann emphasises.

Promotion to the Landesliga would mean a lot to the club, but would come as a bit of a surprise, according to the Schönebeck coach: “We didn’t expect it before the season. But of course we would all be happy if it worked out. But it wouldn’t be the end of the world for us either if we didn’t make it. “
