15 players will leave the club

SG Wattenscheid has been relegated from the Regionalliga. The upheaval is huge, 15 players will leave the Lohrheide.

SG Wattenscheid 09 will have to return to the Oberliga Westfalen just one year after being promoted to the Regionalliga West. There is only one possibility to stay in the 4th league if 1. FC Düren does not get a licence in the end. At the moment, it looks like this is the case, but a final decision has not yet been made.

The upheaval at the SGW, however, is detached from this issue. Decisions had to be made, and for the time being the Wattenscheid team expects to play in the Oberliga Westfalen.

The club has now announced that 15 players will no longer play at the Lohrheide after relegation. With Simon Roscher (Rot-Weiß Erfurt) and Timur Kesim (Rot-Weiss Essen), two loaned players will return to their original clubs. Moritz Hinnenkamp joins the second team of SV Meppen. Steve Tunga remains in the Regionalliga West and will wear the jersey of Wuppertaler SV in the future.

Also bid farewell were Kilian Neufeld, Bruno Staudt, Ensar Candag, Timm Esser, Phil Britscho, Berkant Canbulut, Omar Jessey, Emre Yesilova, Umut Yildiz, Seiya Ihara and Julian Meier.

“We would like to thank all the boys who are leaving us for a variety of reasons. For some it is professional or private reasons, for others sporting or health reasons. We thank all of you for your commitment, each of you is still a welcome guest at the Lohrheidestadion,” explained Wattenscheid’s sports director Christian Pozo y Tamayo.

So far, the Wattenscheid team has signed Mitchell Ozias Newton (Hamburger SV III), Arda Nebi (Sportfreunde Siegen), Serhat Kacmaz (FC Remscheid) and Gianluca Cirillo (FC Kray). In addition, Ahmed Kulalic and Alexandros Dimopoulos will come from our own U19 team.

Should the SGW be allowed to play in the regional league after all, they would do so, as Pozo y Tamayo already emphasised to RS: “Of course we would take the chance to play in the regional league again. It is also clear that nothing would change for us. We would then go into the 2023/2024 Regionalliga season with an Oberliga squad. The times when Wattenscheid brought in players in the summer that the SG could no longer pay for in the winter are over. “
