After 15 departures – eighth addition is clear, the second US boy is coming

15 departures are clear at SG Wattenscheid 09, eight players have joined the team in the meantime.

With Simon Roscher, Timur Kesim, Moritz Hinnenkamp, Steve Tunga, Kilian Neufeld, Bruno Staudt, Ensar Candag, Timm Esser, Phil Britscho, Berkant Canbulut, Omar Jessey, Emre Yesilova, Umut Yildiz, Seiya Ihara and Julian Meier, 15 players will leave SG Wattenscheid after the sporting relegation.

Now the eighth player has been signed. The Wattenscheid team has signed defender Oluremi Martins Williams. The 1.94m tall US-American comes from TuRu Düsseldorf.

Williams began his career in the USA. In 2018, he joined TuS Ennepetal, where he subsequently played 45 competitive matches in the Oberliga Westfalen. In 2020, the 30-year-old returned to the USA, where he signed with New Amsterdam and Michigan Stars from then on.

The return to Germany followed in 2022, this time in the jersey of TuRu Düsseldorf in the Oberliga Niederrhein (25 competitive games, one goal). Williams, who can also play in defensive midfield in addition to central defence, is looking forward to the new challenge in the Ruhr region: “Wattenscheid is a huge club with a great history and when the opportunity arose for me to sign here, I didn’t think twice about it. My goal is to give everything for the club and fight in every game.”

Sporting director Christian Pozo y Tamayo praises the defensive qualities of the new signing, who is already the second US American in the current 09 squad after Mitchell Ozias Newton: “Oluremi will bring a completely different component to our defensive game. He is tall, strong in two fights and able to organise the game from the back. I am sure that will be good for us in the coming season. He has made himself known very quickly for both leagues, so we are very excited about him.”

Martins Williams is the eighth new man for the 2023/2024 squad after Jamal El Mansoury (1. FC Kaan-Marienborn), Mitchell Ozias Newton (Hamburger SV III), Arda Nebi (Sportfreunde Siegen), Serhat Kacmaz (FC Remscheid) and Gianluca Cirillo (FC Kray) as well as Ahmed Kulalic and Alexandros Dimopoulos from our own U19s.

The league in which the new squad will compete has not yet been decided. The Wattenscheid team is planning for the Oberliga Westfalen, but if 1. FC Düren does not get a licence, the SGW will probably stay in the Regionalliga.
