Vice championship for Rot-Weiss Essen: Only Dynamo Dresden has a higher spectator average. A new third league record was set.

The 2023/24 third league season is over: SV Elversberg will be promoted to the second Bundesliga as champions, VfL Osnabrück will follow the Saarlanders up the ladder – SV Wehen-Wiesbaden could also be promoted via relegation. SpVgg Bayreuth, FSV Zwickau, VfB Oldenburg and SV Meppen, on the other hand, were relegated.

Rot-Weiss Essen finished their debut season after promotion from the Regionalliga West in 15th place, but can be happy about the runner-up position in one category: 16,442 spectators on average watched the home games in the stadium on Hafenstraße.

That puts them in second place in the spectator statistics. A total of 312,504 fans watched an RWE home game. Only Dynamo Dresden welcomed more fans on average to their home games (24,532).

League three is booming. In the first season without Corona restrictions since the pandemic, the division set an all-time attendance record, as announced by the DFB on Whit Monday.

A total of 3,115,602 fans flocked to the stadiums for the 380 matches of the 2022/23 season. The average was 8199 per game. The third division thus broke the three-million mark for the second time after 2018/19.

The record attendance of the season was also reported in Dresden. The derby between SGD and Erzgebirge Aue was watched by 30,808 spectators. Dynamo and Rot-Weiss Essen were also among the clubs that brought in the most fans away from home, along with 1860 München and VfL Osnabrück.
