33 goals in the season! Essen’s top scorer extends his contract

DJK Sportfreunde Katernberg finished the season in 5th place, while their top scorer has extended his contract.

Kevin Zamkiewicz, centre forward for DJK Sportfreunde Katernberg, almost secured the goalscorer’s crown in the district league for the second time in a row, but his main rival Maurice Tavio Y Huete (SV Burgaltendorf) took the title on the last matchday with a six-pack (!).

Nevertheless: The quota of Zamkiewicz, who was out for several months with a knee injury, was outstanding: 20 games, 33 goals. In total, the 34-year-old has scored an incredible 65 goals in 40 league games since his move to Katernberg in the summer of 2021. He is the life insurance of the district league club, even if he himself puts the performances of his team-mates in the foreground. Looking back, Zamkiewicz draws a mixed conclusion:

“It was a kind of epidemic season for me. First I had the serious knee injury at the beginning of the season and then in the winter I had the foot injury from the Essen City Indoor Championships. From my point of view, I was never really fit and couldn’t find my feet as I’d hoped. Nevertheless, I still managed to score a goal or two. But I have to thank the team. Without my teammates, it wouldn’t have been possible. I give them a lot of credit for that.”

The goal scorer also emphasised to Forecasting that he will continue to lace up his boots at Meerbruchstraße in the coming season and is looking forward to another year with the team that finished fifth in the league last season: “I decided to stay with Katernberg for another season and I feel very comfortable at the club. You can see that Sascha Fischer, Tobi Buhren and Pascal Hendricks are doing a lot in the background to strengthen us for the next season. That’s why I’m also looking forward to some new arrivals. “

We want to attack and play at the top. We had that chance last season, but unfortunately the second half of the season wasn’t good. We now want to join forces and go out after the summer break with 110 per cent on the hunt for points.

Kevin Zamkiewicz.

The objective of the Essen club is clear: Katernberg wants to have a say in the promotion to the Landesliga in the fifth year after their return to the Bezirksliga. Kevin Zamkiewicz is naturally expected to be an important pillar in this endeavour. “We want to attack and play at the top. We had that chance last season, but unfortunately the second half of the season wasn’t good. We now want to join forces and go out after the summer break with 110 per cent on the hunt for points,” Zamkiewicz looks ahead.
