Clear defeat against Hannover 96 – Test players in action

MSV Duisburg lost the test match against the second division team Hannover 96. The Zebras lost 0:3.

In the sixth test match of the summer preparation MSV Duisburg conceded the first defeat. The Zebras lost 0:3 (0:2) at second-division team Hannover 96 on Wednesday afternoon.

The match against the Lower Saxons, who start the upcoming season one week before the Zebras, was played under exclusion of the public.

Unsurprisingly, the hosts were more dominant at the start, putting coach Torsten Ziegner’s team under pressure early on. Initially, the Duisburg defence held firm, then there was a double strike: Julian Börner headed Hannover into the lead (19th), shortly afterwards Cedric Teuchert increased (22nd). Both goals were preceded by a corner kick.

The MSV offensive, on the other hand, only started to make its mark towards the end of the first half – mostly Alaa Bakir and Kolja Pusch were involved. Duisburg, however, did not have a chance to score.

That changed in the second half. First Bakir’s shot was blocked at the last moment, then Caspar Jander headed the ball against the crossbar (56th). At this point, however, the visitors were trailing 0:3. Again the goal came from a corner, this time Havard Nielssen nodded in (51.).

In the meantime, the Duisburg team had four fresh players. In addition to newcomer Santiago Castaneda, Ziegner used Timo Bornemann, who had recently played for Borussia Dortmund’s U23 team, as a trialist in the second half.

On the opposite side, an old acquaintance took to the pitch: Leo Weinkauf, MSV’s goalkeeper between 2019 and 2022, was substituted for Ron-Robert Zieler in the second half. MSV also changed goalkeepers, with Maximilian Braune replacing Dennis Smarsch.

The young keeper did not have much to do. In the course of the second half, there were hardly any more chances, so that it remained 0:3 from Ziegner’s point of view.

Before MSV returns from the training camp, another test is scheduled. On Friday (5 p.m.), the team will play against regional league team Lok Leipzig.

The new third league season starts two weeks later. MSV’s first match is a visit to SC Freiburg’s U23 (Sunday, 6 August).
