Bitter news for MSV Duisburg: a regular player has to undergo surgery and will not be available to the third division club for months.

That’s bitter! MSV Duisburg will have to do without one of its best players in the near future.

Niklas Kölle, who suffered an injury in the away game against SC Freiburg II (1:1) on matchday 1, will have to undergo surgery. Kölle injured his shoulder in Freiburg last Sunday after just nine minutes when he was hit by an opponent’s foul. The 23-year-old will undergo surgery in Markgröningen on Monday.

“Niklas Kölle will unfortunately miss the Zebras for several months with a serious shoulder injury from the Freiburg game,” MSV officials said.

Kölle has been under contract in Duisburg-Meiderich since the summer of 2022 and is an absolute regular in coach Torsten Ziegner’s team. He can look back on 32 appearances (five goals, two assists) in the jersey of the Zebras so far.

MSV played a test match against West-Regionalligisten SSVg Velbert on Friday evening (11 August). The Duisburg team won 5:0.

On Saturday, 19 August, at 2 p.m., the first home match in the third division is scheduled against TSV 1860 Munich in the Schauinslandreisen Arena.

Ralf Heskamp already emphasised a few days ago that MSV will be active on the market until the end of the summer transfer window on 2 September: “Football is a day-to-day business. We know the market, but the player must not only fulfil two of, for example, five criteria. He should have a desire for the club and it must fit financially. Several factors always play a role. We want to be convinced.”

After Kölle’s fall-out, manager Heskamp will certainly already have his list in mind.

The MSV additions in overview: Santiago Castaneda (Tampa Bay Rowdies), Thomas Pledl (Waldhof Mannheim), Pascal Köpke (1. FC Nürnberg), Dennis Smarsch and Robin Müller (both FC St. Pauli)

Overview of MSV’s departures: Marlon Frey (TSV 1860 München), Moritz Stoppelkamp (Rot-Weiß Oberhausen), Leroy Kwadwo (1860 München), Marvin Ajani, Lukas Raeder, (all destination unknown), Aziz Bouhaddouz (FSV Frankfurt), Julian Hettwer (BVB II), Vincent Gembalies (SC Paderborn II)
