Fortuna Cologne first! Schalke II draw nil in front of big crowd – Düren win

The 5th matchday of the Regionalliga West started on Friday evening (25 August) with four matches. There were two winners.

SC Wiedenbrück and Rot Weiss Ahlen got things started on Friday evening. The derby between these clubs opened the 5th matchday of the Regionalliga West. There was no winner.

Wiedenbrück and Ahlen parted with a 1-1 draw. Jan-Lukas Liehr (45.+1) scored for Wiedenbrück in front of 600 spectators and Ömer Uzun (82.) equalised for Ahlen in the final phase of the match.

The match between Alemannia Aachen and FC Schalke 04 II was also exciting until the final phase. In the end, however, there was no winner in this match either. The final result was 0:0 in front of 13,400 spectators at the Tivoli. After all, the referee showed eight yellow cards in a very heated, hard-fought game. For Aachen, the result is too little. After the change of coach from Helge Hohl to interim coach Reiner Plaßhenrich, Alemannia showed a different attitude than in the 1:4 debacle in Oberhausen, but there is still a lot of room for improvement for the self-proclaimed title contenders.

Fortuna Cologne, meanwhile, is more of a doer than a talker. The Rhinelanders held back on the subject of their season goal and surprised everyone at the start of the season. On Friday evening, Fortuna recorded their fourth win in five games. After the 3-0 win at SSVg Velbert, coach Markus von Ahlen’s team took the lead in the standings. Dominik Lanius (25th), Danny Breitfelder (84th) and Leon Demaj (87th) scored for Cologne in front of 350 fans at promoted Velbert.

1. FC Düren also played at a promoted team. Düren won 3:1 at FC Wegberg-Beeck, who currently help out Düren with their home stadium at the 1. FC home games. The game lasted 100 minutes and the team from Beeck saw two red cards in the match.

The Regionalliga West continues on Saturday. Among others, Wuppertaler SV will play against 1. FC Köln II and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen will meet FC Gütersloh.
