Draw: Tough task for MSV, RWE face ex-players

The second round of the Niederrheinpokal will be drawn on Thursday evening (6pm). You can find all the pairings in our live ticker.

The first round of the Niederrheinpokal is over – and there were no big surprises at the start. Favourites for the title, such as the third division teams MSV Duisburg, Rot-Weiss Essen or the regional league teams Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and Wuppertaler SV, did their duty on Wednesday evening and entered the second round.

Which teams they will face there will be decided on Thursday evening. The Football Association of the Lower Rhine (FVN) has invited the teams to the draw at 6 p.m., while the last four first-round duels will be played later in the evening. Here we will report live on the pairings drawn by former Bundesliga referee Guido Winkmann. The dates for the tournament are scheduled for 26-28 September.

Draw ends with a bombshell

The last pairing Winkmann drew from the lottery pot was the tram derby between KFC Uerdingen and MSV Duisburg. The Zebras, who play two divisions higher, are of course the clear favourites against the top division side. By second-round standards, however, this is a real treat, especially as MSV have often struggled in recent years. Will that also be the case in the Grotenburg, which is sure to be full?

Meanwhile, RWE will face Oberliga bottom side SC St. Tönis with coach Alexander Thamm, who was under contract as a player at Hafenstraße from 2010 to 2012.

The draw is now underway again

Now it’s time for the draw!

Or not? There seems to be a glitch, Jades counts too few balls in one of the lottery pots. Short interruption…

Now the men’s draw continues

Jades explains the rules. There are two pots: one for the third, regional and upper league teams and one for the lower teams. Since there are more higher-ranked teams, there will be three duels between teams from the higher-ranked pot.

Women’s draw to start

First up is the second round draw in the women’s Lower Rhine Cup. The pairings:

Now it starts

Here we go. Niederrheinpokal head of division Wolfgang Jades and ex-Bundesliga referee Guido Winkmann sit on the podium.
