Spectator record – SGS Essen beats Bochum at Ruhrstadion

In the DFB Women’s Cup, VfL Bochum was eliminated against SGS Essen. The VfL women’s spectator record was nevertheless broken.

In the 2nd round of the women’s DFB Cup, VfL Bochum met Bundesliga side SGS Essen in the clear underdog role. A sensation failed to materialise, the Essen team did their homework with aplomb and punched their ticket to the next round with a 4:0 (2:0) win.

However, VfL Bochum could still be happy about their success: At the Ruhrstadion on Castroper Straße, the crowd of 3,300 more than doubled the previous attendance record of the VfL women (1,500). This backdrop was an unusual experience for the Bochum women’s regional league team. “The girls took that in their stride, which also cushions the sadness a little,” VfL coach Kyra Malinowski was sure.

Her team had put up a brave fight and kept the score level for a long time before the Essen team struck ice-cold with a double strike by Ramona Meier (43rd) and Maike Berentzen (44th). “It went more or less as expected. It was a bit unfortunate with the two goals we conceded before half-time. Before that, Essen didn’t come up with much, we were relatively compact,” Malinowski analysed the game.

Jaqueline Meissner (53rd) and Berentzen (54th) again ensured a clear situation shortly after the break. Nevertheless, Malinowski praised her team: “The girls gave it their all and threw everything they had into the game on this hot day.

On the other hand, SGS Essen got off to a good start in their first match. A week before the league opener against Eintracht Frankfurt, coach Markus Högner was generally satisfied with his team. “In the first half hour, we didn’t get into the dangerous zone enough, but then we took the lead at the right time with the double strike,” Högner summed up.

In the end, the Essen players slowed down and switched to a lower gear in temperatures of almost 30 degrees. “I would have liked to play more forward at the back. But our goal was to win, play to nil and advance one round. We managed to do that in these temperatures,” Högner concluded.
