1:7 defeat analysed, now the ETB derby awaits

Oberliga team Adler Union Frintrop will face ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen on Sunday. This is what sports director Hansi Wüst says before the derby.

Last matchday, Adler Union Frintrop were guests of Oberliga leaders Sportfreunde Baumberg.

What followed in this match was the first real damper that the Frintrop side had to put up with since their brilliant promotion. After a good first half and a surprising 1:0 lead at the break, the team completely collapsed after the second half.

From then on, Adler Union had no chance and conceded seven goals in 45 minutes. Many fans had already expected a defeat at the unbeaten leaders, but no one would have expected a 7-1 defeat.

In the days following the second defeat of the season, the focus was on the aftermath of this disastrous second half. Hansi Wüst, Frintrop’s sporting director, explains in retrospect: “The defeat in Baumberg was analysed objectively by the coach and the team. The training week went very well.”

Adler Union Frintrop already have the chance to make amends on Sunday (17 September, 3 pm). City rivals ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen will travel to the Wasserturm for a derby. With a win, Frintrop could overtake ETB in the standings.

Coach Damian Apfeld’s team did not get off to a good start to the season, but last week they were able to beat TSV Meerbusch 3:1, a much longed-for victory.

Sporting director Wüst expects a strong opponent and wants to stand up to them. “ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen has a compact team and is one of the five or six teams that will have something to say about promotion in the end. If we manage to build on our performance from the game against Hilden, then it will be a close game,” predicts the 70-year-old.

Because this is the first derby in a long time and both teams have shown good football with few exceptions, we are expecting a large crowd.

At the start of the season, the double promoted team celebrated a furious 3:2 surprise coup against Hilden. At that time, more than 700 fans were live at the water tower and created a special atmosphere.

Wüst is hoping for a similar response to the ETB derby: “As this is the first derby in a long time and both teams have shown good football with few exceptions, we are expecting a large crowd. “
