Apfeld satisfied, Adler coach prepares team for relegation battle

In the Oberliga Niederrhein, ETB SW Essen won the derby against Adler Union Frintrop 4:1 (3:0). Coach Damian Apfeld’s team thus picked up its second win in a row.

After ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen had a weak start to the new season in the Oberliga Niederrhein, head coach Damian Apfeld’s team recently picked up two wins in a row. On matchday six, ETB won the Essen derby against Adler Union Frintrop 4:1 (3:0).

Already in the first half, ETB made everything clear against the promoted team from Frintrop. Goals from Mohamed Cissé (12th), Samuel Owusu Addai (21st) and Niko Bosnjak (39th) gave the visitors a three-goal lead going into the break. Adler Union did manage to regain some hope after Tim Bönisch scored in the 50th minute, but Owusu Addai made everything clear for the Black and Whites with his second goal in the 72nd minute. ETB coach Apfeld was satisfied with his team’s performance after the victory in the city derby and praised his team. “Frintrop started like the fire brigade, as expected, and we assumed that beforehand. Our plan was to exploit Frintrop’s weaknesses, which we had analysed, and we did that excellently for 40 minutes and showed very good football,” said Apfeld, summing up the first half.

ETB started the second period at a brisk pace, but Apfeld was disturbed by his team conceding a goal five minutes after the restart. “We get the goal against after five minutes because we didn’t get a grip and we didn’t defend well, however, we pulled the game back on our side relatively quickly after that and scored the fourth goal. I think it was a very respectable derby win from us,” Apfeld explained.

Frintrop’s head coach Marcel Cornelissen appeared to be a fair loser after the defeat and congratulated the visitors on a “deserved victory” in which the guests were “superior in all respects”. Furthermore, Frintrop’s head coach set himself up for an exciting relegation battle.

“The performance improvement in the second half was of course important for the feeling, because last week we were shot down in the second half. While the result doesn’t matter, it was about presenting ourselves well and fighting back and we did that. ETB were individually better than us in every position and we were outplayed in pretty much every situation,” Cornelissen acknowledged after the game.

After Frintrop had made a promising start to the season as a promoted team, the coach was complaining about the number of goals conceded after the 1:7 defeat against SF Baumberg a week ago and the most recent defeat against ETB.

Two defeats in a row with a goal difference of 2:11 cannot be glossed over. We are on a par with six or seven other teams and are playing against relegation.

“Two defeats in a row with a goal difference of 2:11 cannot be glossed over. We are on a par with six or seven other teams and are playing against relegation. We have to make sure that we get the points against those teams and next week could be one of those games,” Cornelissen said.

On the next matchday, Alder Union Frintrop plays host to fellow promoted team Mülheimer FC. ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen visit the league leaders from Baumberg.
