SG Essen-Schönebeck outclassed opening opponents

On paper, the SG Essen-Schönebeck’s start in the Bezirksliga Niederrhein 7 could not have gone better. But coach Olaf Rehmann doesn’t want to hang the 11:0 score too high.

SG Essen-Schönebeck are at the top of the table in the Bezirksliga Niederrhein 7 after an 11-0 win over SV Union Velbert. Despite the impressive result, coach Olaf Rehmann is not satisfied with the whole game: “We led 2-0 at half-time, but did not make good use of our scoring opportunities and should have led by a higher margin. At the beginning of the game, we had a hard time getting into the game. The team has high expectations of itself and was not happy with the way it played.”

But after the change of ends, Rehmann’s team showed a gala performance: “In the second half, we managed it better and scored the goals as well. Of course, this is a perfect start, but we know that we shouldn’t set the game too high. Our opponents have also not been so successful in their test matches and seem to have some catching up to do in terms of fitness. I wish Union Velbert every success and that they get back on track quickly.”

A win of this magnitude, however, would be difficult for the opponent to cope with. “I almost felt a bit sorry for them. They did well in the first half and then collapsed. It’s nice for us, the team is young and hungry. The substitutes were also motivated to score even more goals,” said the SG coach happily.

Exits are compensated as a collective

An uncertain task awaits the Essen team next weekend. “With the second team from SC Velbert, it is not yet known who will play. There are various rumours, as the first team does not start the season until the week after,” explains Rehmann.

But after this kick-off, his team is going into the second matchday with a broad chest, regardless of the opponent’s line-up: “We have also been able to build up a lot of self-confidence in preparation. Now we just have to put things in the right order, but we coaches are clear-headed about that. We know that we lost six regulars in the summer, but the team has already developed well. “

The team can’t be compared in terms of individual class, but everyone is committed and extremely strong as a collective.

Even players who only played a small role last year can now prove themselves. “Buba Ceesay scored the first two goals for us, last season he played maybe 40 minutes in total. The team can’t be compared in terms of individual class, but they all put in the work and are extremely strong as a collective. Against teams with real quality, we’ll see how far that carries us. “
