After cup pyro show: 0:4 against Bayern Munich

In the 1st round of the DFB Cup, Preußen Münster showed a courageous performance against Bayern Munich. However, due to the individual class of the record champion, the match was already decided at half-time.

When FC Bayern München visited Preußen Münster for the first and only time to date, the record champions had just become champions for the second time in a row.

Three months after defending their title for the first time, the team coached by Pep Guardiola left no stone unturned: After goals from newly-crowned world champions Mario Götze and Thomas Müller and two further goals from David Alaba and Claudio Pizarro, Bayern advanced to the second round of the DFB Cup with an unchallenged 4:1 victory.

Nine years and nine more championships later, FCB travelled to the cathedral city again on Tuesday evening. Compared to the first edition in 2014, however, the parallels were far greater than the fact that the German champions were guests in Münster. Once again, it was a clash between a third-division team and a Bundesliga team, once again it was the first round of the knockout competition, once again the guests were at Hammer Straße with almost the best line-up, and once again the match was sold out within a very short time.

Just how great the anticipation for the duel against the record champion really was was demonstrated by the Münster crowd at the very latest shortly before kick-off. Under the motto “Faith belongs to the insane”, the fan block set fire to the match on a grand scale, which is why referee Dr. Matthias Jöllenbeck did not release the match until 8.48 p.m. after a three-minute delay.

Choupo-Moting scores early – FCB loanee makes strong save

While the home crowd was ablaze for minutes, the visitors from Munich started like fire on the pitch. It took only nine minutes for Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting to beat Bayern loanee Johannes Schenk for the first time. Three minutes later, Frans Krätzig, who had come on for the injured Serge Gnabry a minute earlier, almost added the second goal with a header.

But thanks to a superb performance by Schenk, the Munich players had to wait until the 40th minute: Goretzka brought the ball butter-softly into the centre, where Konrad Laimer only had to head the ball in. A few minutes after the intermediate 0:2, the last spark of hope for a black-white-green cup miracle was finally buried, because youngster Krätzig added the third FCB goal with the half-time whistle.

After the second half, Hildmann’s team hardly let anything happen at the back, but in the 86th minute the record champions scored a fourth goal in the person of Mathys Tel against Schenk, who was making his debut in the starting eleven.

Thus it was clear late on that there would be no improvement in the result compared to the duel nine years ago. But all of Münster can certainly live with the 0:4 score.
