Outstanding Steinmetz bowls out Wuppertaler SV with Alstaden

Sensation in Oberhausen! Schwarz-Weiß Alstaden knocked Wuppertaler SV out of the Niederrheinpokal.

Schwarz-Weiß Alstaden, as a representative of the district league, knocked regional league team Wuppertaler SV out of the competition. The Oberhausen team won 4:3 after extra time in front of 1000 fans at their home ground. Player-coach Raphael Steinmetz was the outstanding man with three goals.

He told Forecasting before the game: “Everything is possible in a game: We have the pitch, the bad floodlights and the spectators in our favour. Some Wuppertal players won’t even know who they’re playing against and where. I know this from my own time. They won’t feel like playing at all. That might be our chance then.” Steinmetz and Co. got that chance and took it.

The game started as many expected: Alstaden retreated into their own half and WSV pressed – and successfully. A cross from Davide Itter landed at the second post to Phil Beckhoff, who had no trouble and pushed the ball in full – 1:0 for Wuppertal after ten minutes.

Damjan Marceta (14th, 28th) then missed two big opportunities for the regional league team. After 30 minutes, there was really nothing to see from the outsiders from Oberhausen. But then came the scene of player-coach Raphael Steinmetz. The player, who has played in more than 200 games in the regional league, received the ball at the sixteen and took a direct shot – the ball landed in the right corner. Unbelievable, 1:1 (33rd)!

And then this, six minutes before the break: Almost the 2:1 for Alstaden. Steinmetz unleashed an incredible shot from around 20 metres. The ball hit the lower edge of the crossbar and bounced back into the field. Rene Biskup was completely free three metres from goal and missed. That should have been the lead!

After the break, it was the same as in the first 30 minutes: WSV pressed again and wanted a quick decision. But the favourite could not get through.

Alstaden was different: Once again, it was the excellent former Wuppertal player Steinmetz who initiated the attack of the Black and Whites with a brilliant ball. Paul Grave was able to parry Biskup’s first attempt, but the follow-up shot was right on target – 2:1 for the district league team after 53 minutes!

Fortan, the Wuppertal side found it even more difficult and could hardly create any scoring chances – until the 68th minute. Niklas Dams took a cross with his chest and then converted with a volley – a strong move to equalise!

And Alstaden almost had the answer again – of course Steinmetz again: The ex-professional Wuppertal player forced VfL-Bochum’s loaner Grave to make a brilliant save with a long-range shot.

Alstaden fought to the death and had an outstanding goalkeeper in Alexander Krobok. The reward: extra time against the fourth-division team.

And the black and white madness continued: Steinmetz was well served after a double pass and scored on the left corner of the penalty area – this time with his left foot into the right corner, 3:2 (95th) for Alstaden.

The fans of the district league team chanted: “Berlin, Berlin, we’re going to Berlin! WSV failed again and again against Krobok, especially Charlison Benschop had two or three good chances to score, but failed again and again against the outstanding Krobok. And Steinmetz (114th) added another – his third goal of the evening, which made it 4:2, was the decision. Alstaden managed the sensation against Wuppertal! Tim Korzuschek’s 4:3 (120th) was too late.

The district league team is not going to Berlin yet, but is at least sensationally in the Niederrheinpokal round of sixteen!
