In the early English week of the 9th third league matchday, MSV Duisburg lost 0:1 (0:1) at Borussia Dortmund’s U23. The Zebras remain last after a weak performance.
Engin Vural has not been able to turn things around at MSV Duisburg either. In the second game under the U19 coach, the Zebras lost 0:1 at Borussia Dortmund II. The crisis continues, MSV is still waiting for its first win of the season in the 3rd division and had to finish the game with ten players. Instead, they suffered their fourth defeat in a row since Regensburg.
The 38-year-old made one change to his starting eleven compared to the weekend. Santiago Castaneda came on for the disappointing Pascal Köpke in Cologne. Chinedu Ekene formed the forward pair with Tim Köther. Jan Zimmermann made another substitution. Hendry Aron Blank replaced Bjarne Pudel in central defence. Ayman Azhil started in midfield for Franz Roggow.
“MSV – the only really great love”, the almost 1,000 MSV fans who had travelled with them set off pyro for the teams’ run-in. The spectators in the Rote Erde stadium saw an intense but even start of both teams. The visitors again played in a compact 5-3-2 system and had the first good chance through Caspar Jander (6th). Michael Eberwein interfered with the youngster in the penalty area after winning the ball at the last moment.
After 14 minutes, Dortmund took the lead. Marvin Senger cleared a long ball to the feet of Paul-Philipp Besong, Vincent Müller initially saved with his foot. Ex-Duisburg player Julian Hettwer forced the MSV keeper into another brilliant save. Besong nodded the ball over the line after it had bounced off the crossbar (14th minute).
With BVB pro Marius Wolf watching, Hettwer almost added to his tally on the half-hour mark after Joshua Bitter had been picked off in midfield. MSV were looking for their offensive recipe. Until shortly before the break, the Meiderich side remained too harmless until a deflected Senger cross almost went in. Marcel Lotka was on his guard (41st).
Bundesliga referee Dr. Robert Kampka sent both teams into the dressing rooms on time. Fortunately, MSV only conceded one goal, as Eberwein failed to punish a too-short back pass by Senger – his lob: too inaccurate (43rd).
The second half also began with fog in the visitors’ block and later also in the home curva. The Zebras came out of the dressing room motivated and had more possession. However, the Vural team was not able to convert this into goals. The MSV coach reacted after one hour, took the yellow-red endangered Senger off the field and brought in Köpke, a fresh offensive man. His first action: a header after a Feltscher cross, which just missed the left post (67.).
The game rippled along. The will of Duisburg could not be denied. Köpke once again hit the outer net (85th). Jander aimed too high (89th). However, the visitors did not come close to equalising, while BVB managed to hold on to their narrow lead until the end of the seven-minute stoppage time and to stay in fourth place in the 3rd division. To make matters worse, captain Mai was sent off with a yellow card after his second foul.
MSV’s next home match is against promoted Preußen Münster on Saturday (2 p.m.). The ninth attempt at the first three points of the current season.
