Three-league side Rot-Weiss Essen didn’t let their guard down at SC St. Tönis and won the Lower Rhine Cup 5-0, much to the delight of coach Christoph Dabrowski.

After the 2-1 defeat at SSV Ulm 1846 on Sunday, Rot-Weiss Essen had the chance to score again just three days later. On Wednesday evening, RWE hosted SC St. Tönis in the second round of the Niederrheinpokal. This was a must-win game for the defending champions.

The favourite fulfilled this duty with flying colours and won 5:0 (3:0). RWE set the course for victory early on, scoring three goals in the first half through Aaron Manu (4th) and Leonardo Vonic’s brace (10th, 33rd).

In the second half, Marvin Obuz (73rd) and U19 captain Mats Brune (76th) added two more goals and ultimately ensured a deserved 5:0 final score against a passionate host. The third-division team’s victory was never in jeopardy. RWE coach Christoph Dabrowski, who had changed his starting eleven on nine positions compared to the Ulm game, was satisfied with his team’s performance afterwards:

“Of course we are happy to have progressed to the next round. In principle, I always go to cup games, especially against lower-class opponents, with a certain amount of respect. On Tuesday, we saw what the cup round had to offer. Wuppertaler SV was knocked out against a district league team and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen also had a hard time. That’s why you never know how a game like this will develop,” explained the football coach.

For the Red and Whites, it’s back to the 3rd Division on Sunday (01 October, 13.30) – and the task is a tough one. RWE will then welcome current leaders Dynamo Dresden to the Hafenstraße stadium.
