Heidenheim upset Union, Leverkusen and Stuttgart march on

A fantastic free kick helps 1. FC Heidenheim to victory over Union Berlin. Alongside Leverkusen and Stuttgart, VfL Wolfsburg also celebrated a win against Frankfurt.

Bayer Leverkusen made the best start to the season in the club’s history with a commanding away victory. The Rhinelanders won 3-0 (1-0) at last-place FSV Mainz 05 and took 16 points from their first six games of the season for the first time. Xabi Alonso’s team thus moved back to the top of the table, at least temporarily.

Just one point behind them came VfB Stuttgart, who continued their fairytale journey with a 2-0 (0-0) win at 1. FC Köln. Substitute Deniz Undav scored twice.

Promoted 1. FC Heidenheim celebrated their second win with a 1:0 (0:0) against Champions League participant Union Berlin. Jan-Niklas Beste scored the winner with a direct free kick into the corner.

Mönchengladbach celebrate first win of the season

Borussia Mönchengladbach celebrated their first win of the season under coach Gerardo Seoane. Thanks to the outstanding double scorer Alessane Plea, the Borussians won 3:1 (3:0) at VfL Bochum.

The afternoon turned bitter for Eintracht Frankfurt. Last year’s Europa League winners not only lost the match at VfL Wolfsburg 0:2 (0:1), but also lost playmaker Mario Götze to a yellow card. Top scorer Jonas Wind scored twice for the Wolves.
