SC Verl celebrated a 5-0 win at Rot-Weiss Essen. The Hafenstraße seems to be a good place for the East Westphalians.

With the 5-0 win at Rot-Weiss Essen, SC Verl has set a new club record. Never before has the sports club won a match by such a high score in its more than three-year history in the Third League.

In general, the Hafenstraße seems to be a good place for the SCV. For the fifth time in a row, the East Westphalians remained unbeaten in Essen – this series had already begun in Regionalliga times.

And there is another curious statistic: The last time RWE lost a competitive match in front of its own fans with a score of 0:5 was 26 years ago. Back then, the opponent on the seventh matchday of the 1997/98 regional league season was, of course, SC Verl.

While the Esseners probably still need a little time to digest the heavy defeat, the Verlers were jubilant. They passed Rot-Weiss in the table and celebrated the next success after the 3:1 in the derby against Arminia Bielefeld during the week.

“It’s a nice day for us,” coach Alexander Ende said on the microphone at Magenta Sport. “We didn’t get in that well at all. The can opener was the 1:0. After that, everything was easier. We combined faster and were really good.”

The coach had changed three times at halftime – a risky measure that worked out. But the man of the day was on the pitch from the start: Oliver Batista Meier. The 22-year-old player on loan from Dynamo Dresden had set up the 1:0 after a strong solo. In the second half, he then made his own appearance as a scorer – and how: Within eleven minutes, Batista Meier scored a hat trick (61st to 72nd minute) and caused eerie silence at Hafenstraße.

“He gets a lot of pats on the back anyway,” said Ende, praising the outstanding German-Brazilian not for his four goal contributions – but for his defensive work.

Batista Meier himself was “extremely happy” after the final whistle, revealing that he was “actually really flat” in his third starting eleven appearance in a week. “But I wanted to give everything again before we have two days off.”

The former Bayern talent had already scored against Bielefeld during the week and now tops the scorers’ list in the 3. Liga with seven goals and four assists.

Batista Meier can further expand this strong record next Saturday against FC Ingolstadt. “We have a run now and want to stay greedy – but also humble,” said coach Ende. “In this league, you have to work for everything again and again. “
