This is how Küper explains his return to Spielvereinigung Schonnebeck

Calvin Küper moved back to Schonnebeck shortly after leaving SG Wattenscheid. He spoke to RS about the reasons why he went back to the Oberliga Niederrhein.

It was just 73 days between Calvin Küper’s last and most recent competitive match in the kit of Spielvereinigung Schonnebeck. In the meantime, the offensive player ventured from the Oberliga to the Regionalliga and moved from the Schwalben to the Regionalliga promoted SG Wattenscheid 09 at the end of last season.

However, the 21-year-old did not stay at Lohrheide for long and returned to Schonnebeck after just two months. The native of Mülheim explained how and why this came about as follows: “Mainly the desire came from me. I didn’t feel one hundred percent comfortable and I also think that the way I play football didn’t necessarily suit the coach and Wattenscheid 09. I also really missed being on the pitch for 90 minutes every week. Schonnebeck was then looking for someone else for the offensive and I think it’s a win-win situation for both sides. “

I never shy away from competition

Küper stressed that the competitive situation in the Wattenscheid offence was not a reason for his return to Schetters Busch: “I didn’t come back, as many might think, because the competition was too great. I never shy away from competition.”

He rather felt that “I didn’t really get the chance to establish myself there and show myself.” Now Küper is happy that he can play for the Schwalben again: “It’s clear that I feel a thousand times more comfortable in Schonnebeck with the coach, who really wanted me, with the board, who really wanted me and the boys, who are happy that I’m here. Now I can just play football freely again.”

However, Küper would dare to take the step into the 4th league again in the future: “The step into the regional league was the right one this year, but maybe not to Wattenscheid 09, but rather somewhere else. That didn’t work out now. But who knows, maybe next year or the year after. Then maybe somewhere else where it fits better. But even then, I’d think twice about where exactly I’m going, whether it suits me in terms of the way football is played.
