MSV Duisburg are teetering on the brink. There was a 1:2 (0:0) home defeat against FC Ingolstadt. Ingo Wald protects coach Boris Schommers.
MSV Duisburg is staggering towards the Regionalliga West. The Zebras suffered another serious setback on Saturday.
MSV lost their home game against FC Ingolstadt 1:2 (0:0) in the Schauinslandreisen Arena in front of just 8189 spectators – a record minus crowd. With just eight points from 14 games, Duisburg remain penultimate, and a point against Preußen Münster on Sunday could see Freiburg II pass the red lantern to MSV.
The mood in Duisburg could not have been worse. There were loud whistles for the team after the game and many spectators had already left the stadium before the final whistle. Resignation spread among the supporters of the traditional club.
David Kopacz (57′) and Simon Lorenz (71′) scored for the visitors, while Alexander Esswein’s penalty (80′) was not enough for the Meiderich side to secure a point. The 19-year-old Hamza Anhari had a great chance to equalize, but failed to hit the target from close range.
“The 2:2 would have been deserved,” said MSV coach Boris Schommers afterwards on Magenta Sport. He also saw positive things after the ninth defeat of the season. “We’re not scoring from five meters. These balls have to be on target. We came back with great morale after going 2-0 down. You could see that the team wanted it and showed passion. I don’t blame anyone for not pushing the ball over the line from five meters.”
After the bitter defeat, MSV president Ingo Wald appeared in front of the camera and commented on the Zebras’ mega-crisis in an interview on Magenta Sport. Wald analyzed that the team had a mental problem: “The disappointment is huge. You can see the team’s insecurity in every situation. They are willing, but fall far short of their potential. I can understand the fans’ displeasure. We won’t give up, we want to turn things around together. “
The onus is now on the coach and sporting management. In terms of points scored, things are not looking good under Boris Schommers. But I do believe that Boris Schommers is the right man for MSV Duisburg. But of course that’s not enough. The results don’t speak for us.
Ingo Wald
After the fourth defeat in the fifth competitive match under Boris Schommers, doubts are growing as to whether this can be achieved with this coach. The 44-year-old has managed just one point in four league games, not to mention the embarrassing exit in the Lower Rhine Cup at KFC Uerdingen. Wald was asked at Magenta whether the club would have to think about relying on Engin Vural again. “That can’t be the solution right now,” said Wald.
Vural had won the only game of the season with the Zebras, but was then demoted and returned to the U19s because those responsible had decided on Schommers. Wald confirmed that nothing will change in the near future: “It’s up to the coach and sporting management now. In terms of points scored, things are not looking good under Boris Schommers. But I do believe that Boris Schommers is the right man for MSV Duisburg. But of course that’s not enough. The results don’t speak for us. “
