Schalke, VfL Bochum and MSV Duisburg have to look down from the Ruhr region in their leagues. That’s how many points have been enough to avoid relegation in recent years.
While VfL Bochum were expected to be in the relegation battle in the Bundesliga, the fight for survival comes as a surprise for FC Schalke 04 in the 2nd Bundesliga and MSV Duisburg in the 3rd league.
It is therefore worth taking a look at the last ten years and how many points were enough in each case to reach the first non-relegation place. In brackets are the values that would theoretically have been enough to secure relegation.
What is striking is that more points are needed on average in the 3rd division, which is of course also due to the fact that there are four more match days. However, it should be mentioned here that there were also fewer relegations from time to time due to bankruptcies or other relegations that were not for sporting reasons.
It could be particularly tough for MSV, who have just eight points to their name after 14 games. In the last three years, 38 points were enough to secure relegation, and before that, sometimes more. This means that MSV will have to pick up 30 points in the remaining games – and that in such a balanced league. There are easier tasks.
