European Football Championship: France shows Italy the limits with 5:1

France got off to a perfect start at the European Women’s Football Championship. Grace Geyoro of Paris Saint-Germain stood out in the 5-1 win over Italy – the 25-year-old contributed three goals.

Her club-mate Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Delphine Cascarino of Champions League winners Olympique Lyon scored the other goals. The score was 5-0 at half-time before Martina Piemonte scored Italy’s consolation goal in the second half.

With this, “Les Bleues” once again made it clear that they are among the favourites. The Italians, on the other hand, will have to improve considerably if they want to get through the preliminary round.

Belgium and Iceland drew 1-1 in the other Group D match of the evening, Berglind Thorvaldsdóttir putting the northern Europeans in front with a second-half goal after she had missed a handball in the 33rd minute. Justine Vanhaevermaet later converted a penalty to equalise for Belgium.

In Group A, Austria and Northern Ireland will meet today. Hosts England will play Norway. Both already have three points and can advance to the quarter-finals with a win – provided the other match ends in a draw.
