Ex-Duisburger is back in top form

Fortuna Düsseldorf celebrated their second big win in a row with a 5:0 victory at 1. FC Nürnberg. A striker who previously played for MSV Duisburg played a part in this.

Vincent Vermeij seems to have taken the right path. That’s often easy to say in hindsight, but it’s true of the Fortuna Düsseldorf striker this season. While the 29-year-old has his sights set on the promotion places in the Bundesliga 2, things are looking anything but rosy at his former clubs in Germany.

The fact that the Dutch striker can now dream of promotion to the Bundesliga also has to do with his own improved performance. In the last two games – the 5:3 against FC Schalke 04 and the 5:0 against 1. FC Nürnberg – he scored a total of five times. Before that, he had only scored twice in eleven league games.

Vermeij has “arrived” in Düsseldorf

“I’ve simply arrived in the meantime. I feel good and realize that I can be important for the team,” said Vermeij after the win in Nuremberg, which he helped shape with a brace. Before he regained his goalscoring touch, the Dutchman suffered a concussion on November 3 and missed a whole match. Since then, things have gone uphill for him – as they have for Fortuna.

Things are very different at his former clubs. Last season, Vermeij still played for SC Freiburg II in the 3rd division – scoring 15 goals for the season and celebrating the runners-up spot with the Breisgauers. However, his contract was not extended after the season. Nevertheless, he made his debut in the top flight under coach Christian Streich. SC Freiburg II is now deep in the basement of the 3rd division table

Just like Vincent Vermeij’s second ex-club: MSV Duisburg. Although the team from Meiderich were able to celebrate their second win of the season last matchday, they are still deep in the relegation battle. During his time at MSV Duisburg, Vermeij scored 22 times in 56 third division matches and set up twelve goals. Duisburg would probably like to have a striker like that back, as they have the worst offense in the league with just ten goals.

Fortuna Düsseldorf will continue their campaign this week in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup at 1. FC Magdeburg (December 5, 6 p.m.). “We want to progress to the next round,” said Vermeij. Maybe he can help with his goals again
