Rot-Weiss Essen will play their last game of 2023 against Hallescher FC on Tuesday (7pm, live ticker). The start of 2024 will also be exciting from RWE’s point of view.
Rot-Weiss Essen are playing an outstanding third division season. Hand on heart, dear RWE fans: Who would have thought that after the last series? Probably no one.
While the Rot-Weiss professionals and above all coach Christoph Dabrowski were harshly criticized last season, they are now being celebrated. Welcome to the soccer (daily) business.
Dabrowski has now been RWE coach for 66 games (points average of 1.5 points per game). He has a bear’s share in the fact that the club from Bergeborbecker Hafenstraße can dream of promotion to Bundesliga 2 in the 2023/2024 season. Dabrowski has developed the team at breakneck speed compared to last season and, yes, has actually already shaped it into a top team in the 3rd division.
Hardly any other team has managed to take points off both SSV Jahn Regensburg and Dynamo Dresden this season. RWE, meanwhile, played to a goalless draw against leaders Regensburg and defeated the visitors from Dresden 3:1 in Essen.
Who would have thought before the season that RWE would be in such a good position at the 23/24 winter break? Dabrowski’s answer: “In soccer, anything is possible. Our credo was that we want to work hard. I’m very proud of the team. The players, the coaching team, the staff, every single one of them has developed. I would like to see us bring everything to a well-rounded conclusion with the home game against Halle and go into the winter break successfully.”
He added at the press conference ahead of the HFC match: “We want to stay in sight of the top places. That’s much more pleasant than fighting for our sporting existence.”
The 45-year-old soccer coach is also in a pleasant situation personally. Dabrowski’s contract is due to expire on June 30, 2024. A new contract is in sight. Christian Flüthmann, Essen’s sporting director, emphasized to Forecasting just a few days ago that they will sit down with the successful coach – yes, that’s what you can call Dabrowski now.
“Nothing has changed in that respect. That’s how we stayed,” said Dabrowski once again before the last game of the year.
When asked whether RWE fans should be worried that another club might interfere with the relationship between Dabrowski and Rot-Weiss Essen, the former Bundesliga professional said: “I don’t see why Rot-Weiss Essen should be worried. We’re not at the end here yet and still have a lot planned.” Words that every RWE fan will be happy to hear just before Christmas and the turn of the year. In January, things will immediately get exciting with the contract talks
